TBN Test Kit

TBN Test Kit

The Total Base Number (TBN) is a key measure of how well the lubricant can neutralize acidic substances. A TBN test kit gives you an accurate way to figure out the best time to change your oil and make sure your equipment is protected by quickly measuring the oil’s residual base number and moisture content.

Your Leading TBN Test Kit Manufacturer in China

Soohow Instrument has been working in the field of fluid analysis for more than ten years. They have created their own TBN test kit that uses pressure sensor technology and built-in software to quickly find out the residual base number and moisture content in lubricants.

This TBN test kit is perfect for quick on-site assessments in many fields, such as automotive, industrial, power generation, mining, and marine industries. It has a tough, small design and runs on batteries.

To get more information about our TBN test kits or to set up an on-site demonstration, please contact Soohow Instrument. This will make testing your lubricant’s TBN and moisture faster and easier.

Offer a Variety of TBN Test Kits for You

The Soohow Portable TBN test kit uses the pressure method. It injects an oil sample directly into a pressure chamber, where the device automatically measures and calculates the residual Total Base Number (TBN). Each test only takes a few minutes, which makes testing on-site much more efficient.

Supports direct injection of oil samples and can detect both alkalinity and moisture content at the same time.

TBN Test Kit Complementary Solutions

TBN test kits can quickly tell you the oil’s residual base number and water content, but one test can only tell you how resistant the oil is to acid right now. It is usually necessary to use them with other testing methods to fully evaluate the condition of the equipment and when to change the oil. Soohow gives you everything you need to test oil. Users can use a complete evaluation system that combines base number data with spectral, ferrographic, and viscosity data to get a reliable basis for creating scientific oil change cycles and maintenance plans. This system can tell them everything from how well the oil is working to how well the equipment is working.

What does Total Base Number mean? What makes it important to test for it?

The Total Base Number (TBN) tells you how well a lubricating oil can neutralize acidic substances. Its unit is mgKOH/g. When you use lubricating oil, it will slowly lose its alkalinity because it will oxidize, let in fuel combustion products, and other things. If the base value drops below 50% of the new oil value or the absolute value drops below 3–5 mgKOH/g, the oil loses its ability to resist acid, which can cause equipment to rust. Using a TBN test kit to check the Total Base Number (TBN) on a regular basis can tell you how much longer the oil will last and keep acid corrosion from damaging your equipment.

Does the TBN test kit's pressure method give the same results as the standard laboratory titration method?

The TBN test kit uses the pressure method to find out how alkaline something is by measuring the gas pressure that comes from the reaction between the oil sample and the reagent. It matches up well with the old-fashioned lab titration method (ASTM D2896). A lot of comparative tests show that the two methods usually give results that are within ±5% of each other, which is exactly what is needed for quick on-site judgment. If you need a formal report or arbitration testing, though, it is best to use laboratory titration to confirm.

What kinds of oils can a TBN test kit look at? Can it check oil that is both new and old?

The TBN test kit works with many kinds of oils, including engine oils, marine oils, industrial gear oils, hydraulic oils, turbine oils, and more. You can use a TBN test kit to test new oil for its initial base value and to see how it compares to other oils. You can also use a TBN test kit to test oil that is already in use for its residual base value and to see how its base value is changing over time. The Soohow TBN test kit can find TBN levels from 0 to 80, which includes common types of oils, from low-alkalinity industrial oils to high-alkalinity marine oils. If the oil samples have very high alkalinity (>80), it is best to dilute them before testing.

How should the results of the tests be used to figure out when to change the oil? When does the Total Base Number (TBN) show that it's time to change the oil?

To find the best time to change the oil, you need to look at the whole picture. When the TBN drops below 50% of the new oil value or when its absolute value drops below 3–5 mg KOH/g, it’s time to change the oil. Different types of equipment have different needs. For example, marine medium-speed engine oils need a higher TBN (>6 TBN), while industrial gear oils need a lower TBN (>2 TBN). It is best to make a full judgment by also looking at changes in viscosity and the results of spectroscopic analysis. A single test result is only a guide; trends that have been seen over time are more useful.

Do you need to learn how to use the Soohow TBN test kit? Is there someone who can teach?

The Soohow TBN test kit is very easy to use. We offer detailed illustrated manuals and short instructional videos that show you how to use the device. You only need to watch them once to learn how to use them. We can set up remote video instruction if you’d rather have someone walk you through the process. It only takes half an hour. Before we finish, we make sure you are completely comfortable using the device by clearly explaining each step, from loading the oil sample and tightening the bottom cap to starting the test and reading the results.
