Portable Density Meter for On-Site Testing
The core value of portable density meters lies in liberating density testing from the laboratory to the field. Traditional density testing requires sending oil samples to a laboratory and waiting for hours or even days to get the results; while the DM100 portable density meter weighs only 260g, can be operated with one hand, is powered by two AAA batteries, and can be used to complete the test instantly next to the equipment, in the warehouse, or in the field.
From sampling to reading, the entire process takes no more than 2 minutes. This “instant measurement and results” capability eliminates the need for waiting for oil product acceptance, frees equipment status assessment from relying on experience-based speculation, and provides real-time data support for oil change decisions.
The U-tube oscillation method measures density by measuring the frequency of oscillation of a glass tube filled with the liquid sample. It is not affected by human reading errors, is very fast (takes only a few seconds), only needs a small sample volume (2 mL), and automatically compensates for temperature. The traditional hydrometer method, on the other hand, requires a water bath that stays at the same temperature, a sample volume of more than 100 mL, and manual readings by the operator. It also takes a long time (tens of minutes). The results from the DM100 portable density meter match up very well with the results from the hydrometer method. This means that the DM100 is perfect for quick on-site testing.
You need to clean the measuring cell every so often. For regular oil samples: After the test is done, rinse the cell 2–3 times with a solvent like petroleum ether, and then dry it with compressed air. For oil samples that are very thick or very dirty: After testing, it is best to clean the cell right away. The cleaning schedule depends on how often you test and how dirty the samples are. Usually, cleaning should be done once a week or after every 50 measurements. Before putting the device away for a long time, the measuring cell must be cleaned and dried completely.
The DM100 portable density meter has a modular sampling pump that can be taken apart and put back together quickly. Routine maintenance includes checking the sampling lines for blockages or leaks on a regular basis, cleaning the sampling pump and measuring cell with a cleaning solution (like petroleum ether) after use, and not letting corrosive liquids enter the system. If the sampling pump gets old or breaks, you can just replace it with a spare pump. You don’t have to send the unit back to the factory for repairs.
a two-phase state, like an oil-water mixture?
This is not a good idea. When an oil-water mixture forms an emulsion, the sample is no longer homogeneous, which causes the oscillation frequencies to be unstable. This means that the measurement results will not accurately show the true density. It is best to let the oil and water separate on their own before taking the upper oil layer for testing. Alternatively, you can use other methods, like centrifugation, to process the sample before measuring it. If there is a lot of emulsification during an on-site inspection, it is best to call the oil sample abnormal right away, without having to measure its density.
